Tree Planting – Forest Regeneration

Project Background

‘Forest Regeneration’ is the rebuilding of a forest, an ecosystem that embraces diversities.

In 2019, the Mushroom Initiative joined the Country Parks Plantation Enrichment Program for five years to manage a plantation site in Kap Lung, Tai Mo Shan.

In the past,  exotic fast-growing tree species such as Acacia confusa, Lophostemon confertus and Casuarina equisetifolia were vastly planted to prevent soil erosion. The plantations have aged as decades have passed, there is a need to replant native trees to enrich the plantations to enhance biodiversity and provide better habitats for local wildlife.

Project Highlights

Mimicking the multi-layer design in natural forest

A mix of native tree species of  with different full-grown heights was carefully selected to build the multiple layers found in natural forests.


Inoculation of native Arbuscular Mycorrizhal Fungi (Glomus Mosseae
As the first organization in HK to experiment and apply Mycorrhizal fungi in tree-planting project, TMI focuses on enriching forest soil food web and optimizing seedlings’ health and resilience against unfavourable conditions.
Stressing the Importance of Survival Rate
Not only about planting trees, we also aim at planting trees with high survival rate in the long run. The survival rate in the first reforestation project in Thailand from 2017 is more than 80% until 2019.
Promoting Soil Health
Starting from healthy soil ecology and high photosynthesis efficiency, we study and research the carbon sequestration potential in soil in the possible cooperation with universities.
