Understanding Fungi

What are Fungi?

There are many types of fungi. They are neither plants nor animals but belong to a separate kingdom, the kingdom Fungi.

Why are fungi special?

Green plants have chlorophyll that helps them make food from sunlight. Fungi lack chlorophyll and cannot do so. Because they cannot make their own food, fungi feed on plant and animal matter. Fungi obtain nutrition, their food, by absorption.

Some fungi only feed on decaying or dead organic matter. Others feed on living plants and animals. Fungi also reproduce very differently from plants and animals. And fungi do not need light to grow.
